Junk food could become the healthy option, say scientists

9th March 2005

Scientists from Hammersmith Hospital have said they will be able to make junk foods such as burgers and fries, the healthy option in the future, according to a report by the BBC. Dr Gary Frost, head of nutrition at Hammersmith, says “healthy” processed foods which are low in fat and sugar, are crucial in order to tackle the UK’s growing obesity problems.

He added that policies pushing higher consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables are not likely to be successful. And says that people continue to pick unhealthy options and the UK is “staring down the barrel of a gun” in terms of an obesity crisis. “We should manipulate what we like to choose to eat and try to make that more healthy,” says Frost.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health told the BBC that it wants to help people make a healthier choice when it comes to diet. “We are taking action to increase the availability of healthier food, including levels of salt, added sugars, and fat in prepared and processed food and increasing access to fruit and vegetables.”

Notes from Robert Redfern:
Has no one told these people that sugar and salt are not the major evils? Eating Starchy Carbs, the lack of 10 portions of fruit and Vegetables and Nutrient Deficiency in all of our foods is the big evil.
